Hi everyone!
Hope you've bene having a cozy weekend inside in this winter wonderland!
Science:
This week we have started a brief introduction to our Electricity and Magnetism unit and vocabulary sheets will be coming home this week. our photocopier has been down so we will have those sent out as soon as it is fixed! In the meantime here are some videos you can use to get more familiarized on the concepts.
Social Studies:
We have started our last project in our Arctic Region unit this week, and students are taking an imaginary trip to Nunavut. For each section outlined in the project outline below, students will write a paragraph or two detailing their responses. It is important to include the overarching "WHY" behind their answers to illuminate their thoughts and decision making processes. All answers can be found using the site :https://www.nunavuttourism.com/
We will have our unit test next week, and the date will be announced this coming week ahead. Students will be provided with a study guide that we will generate as a group in class.
Language Arts:
We have started our journey into story writing and are beginning our growth in this area by exploring writing a good "hook" and an introduction for short stories. we have been using various story writing prompts in class and limiting our writing to these tow beginning steps. When we have decided we have mastered these aspects, we will have several story-starters in our banks to choose from to take our next steps into writing a complete short story.
A good hook, as we have discussed, should pique the reader's curiosity by giving a hint of what is to come (without giving it all away), and use enticing language that leaves the reader needing answers!
A good introduction should let the reader know from which perspective the story will be told (1st person, 3rd person, or omniscient) as well as the building blocks that introduce main characters and setting. It may, at times, also lightly touch on what the main problem of the story will be.
This week we'll be continuing to look into the power of perspective in our writing by reading some "fractured fairytales" that are told from an unexpected character's point of view.
Math:
In Math we have been working hard on nailing down our long division skills and have been working with both the traditional method (Does McDonald's Sell Burgers - Division, Multiplication, Subtraction, and Bring down- likely how parents as well as myself were taught!) as well as Big 7 Division, which I posted a video tutorial for on the blog last week. While students can use any strategy they like that helps them be successful, we will be having a test on long division this Thursday that will have two to three questions specifying which method they will have to use FOR THOSE 2-3 QUESTIONS ONLY. All other questions will be open for students to choose the strategy they are most comfortable with using. The test will also include some word questions, which we have been practicing in class.
A reminder to parents that all CBE staff will be participating in a Professional development Day on Friday this coming week and there will be no classes for students.
I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend and am wishing you all a great week ahead!

You are going on a trip to Nunavut!
You’ll need to decide:
Which cities/town you’ll visit.
How to get there.
Where you’ll stay.
What you’ll see (animals, nature, and one really interesting
thing.)
What you’ll do (three activities, including one related to
art and/or performance)
What kinds of flowers could you see there? (if you went in
the summer, that is)
How to see the floe edge (and what that means) and what you
can expect to experience.
What will you pack? Draw a picture of everything you’ll put
in your suitcase.
What can you expect to eat?
Two sporting activities you would do.
You will also bring a sketchbook and draw two to three
natural settings of places you might have seen.
For each section, please write a detailed paragraph using
complete sentences and supporting information/facts that you have found using
the website https://www.nunavuttourism.com/
