This week in Walkertown

This week we've covered a lot of ground and have been learning some exciting things!

In Math we've begun working on double digit multiplication, as well as exploring word problems. We've practiced the procedures together and are starting to work our multiplication muscles out! Here are some videos to help review the process:

In Science we explored the reasons for the seasons, as well as why some locations don't experiences the same seasonal changes as we do here in Calgary! Below are some videos explaining how the axis of our planet causes different seasons throughout the year, as well as how to recognize lines of  longitude and latitude! As a class, we've also started to review some helpful interactive tutorials about many of the concepts we have covered in our Weather Unit so far!

In Social Studies we have been exploring the history of the Acadians in Atlantic Canada, and learned about "The Great Upheaval" and the displacement of thousands of Acadian families.

We also learned about a fun and unique tradition in Winsor, NS that involves.....GIANT pumpkins! And even more exciting- GIANT PUMPKIN BOAT RACES! We used the fun history of Howard Dill and his giant pumpkins as a cross-curricular inspiration point! In Art, we created our own papier mache pumpkins, which we will continue working on in the coming weeks as we transform them into our very own giant pumpkin vessels! In Language Arts, we used our boats as a topic to write about using our descriptive language skills and poetic devices. We have written some vivid pictures through describing sensory information, using similes and metaphor, as well as hyperbole and personification. Our words are really starting to take life! Below are the links to share with parents to learn all about Howard Dill and the Great Pumpkin Regatta.

Everyone did an excellent job today running for Terry Fox and we raised a great amount of donations to support cancer research! Go Wildwood!

As we approach this coming week, students should be making sure to practice knowing all of Canada's provinces and capitals for an upcoming quiz. We will also be quizzing our knowledge of key facts about the Atlantic, such as climate, industry, landscape, and which provinces are included in the region. We will be covering historical and cultural facts in another test later on in the coming weeks, and will be reviewing that separately.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

What's new in Room 2

Hi everyone, Today we had a challenge in class to try and come up with strategies to measure the volume of a very irregularly shaped item- and boy was it hard! Here is a picture of the item you had to work with: We came up with some ideas- and a lot of frustration with this perplexing problem!!! The class then watched the attached video on Archimedes Principle, and learned about his discovery. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ijj58xD5fDI We have spent a lot of time in our Geometry unit, and will be getting ready for a test that will be scheduled for the end of next week (Date TBA). Here are the following criteria we will be responsible for knowing on this test: 1. Calculating Area, Volume, and Perimeter (Perimeter of irregularly shaped items included, Area of rectangular shapes, or irregular shapes that are two or more rectangles combined, and Volume of a cube or rectangular prism). 2. Identifying shapes (including squares, triangles, parallelograms, trapezoids,  pentagon...

Introduction to Wetlands/and Chem test Thursday

Hi everyone! Today we began our studies in the Wetlands Unit for Science! We learned about the importance of adaptations for each living being's survival in their own environment, and how different environments might call for a different set of adaptations. We even did a fun experiment in class where we were tasked with filling out a questionnaire WITHOUT the use of some of our very important human adaptations. Some of us could not use our eyes, or our thumbs, or our arms, or even out mouths! We quickly discovered how important adaptations can be for us to live happily and successfully. Here are some videos about the adaptations of a Peppered Moth, as well as how some creatures change over time to meet the needs of their evolving environment. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xDSFlRunlrU Types of Wetlands: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1WlmGyN9VXs We'll keep learning about wetlands as the year comes to a close, and will have a field trip to Weaselhead Park on May 7...
