This week in Room 2 (October 8th-12th)

Wishing everyone a great weekend and sending a big thank you for putting together such a wonderful class party today! Our fort was a tremendous success, the snacks were delicious (I think Mason Buttle would be especially fond of the apple treats!), the jammies were adorable, and all of us had a fantastic time reading together!
Kids- show this book trailer for "The Truth As Told By Mason Buttle" and tell them about the mystery we've been trying to solve!

Here are some important dates and events to keep in mind as we move into next week:
- Monday - Math Quiz
Multi-digit multiplication using traditional method and lattice method. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RVYwunbpMHA&t=243s

- Wednesday- Social Studies Quiz: Atlantic Region (history/culture).
Please review the hard copy hand outs I gave you to study from, as well as the videos and notes posted previously in the blog.

- Weekend discussion topics:

This week was a time of profound and meaningful learning for us as a class as we further explored Canadian history in the Atlantic Region, with a focus on the Underground Railroad, the Black Loyalists, and the tragic demolition of the community of Africville, Halifax.
As a class, we discussed the dangers faced by those who were enslaved by their oppressors, and how they would use an intricate underground social network and secret codes to help people escape to attain their rightful personal freedom. We discussed why some history is debated, such as the "quilt codes" used for communicating escape strategies, largely due to the fact that it is an oral history passed down through generations. We also read "Caged Bird" by Maya Angelou and discussed its meaning as a class in our Poetry studies for Language Arts. Kids- you did a fantastic job and I am so very proud of how thoughtful and considerate you were when thinking about Ms. Angelou's iconic words! Shae this poem with your parents and help explain what it's all about, and why Maya Angelou is such an important writer. What similes and metaphors is she using? Why is it so smart to use a poem to describer her experiences? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjr-LVpU0hk

A topic of discussion for families to discuss this weekend might be:
Why might oral history be a very valuable part of our Canadian identity?

What's new in Room 2

Hi everyone, Today we had a challenge in class to try and come up with strategies to measure the volume of a very irregularly shaped item- and boy was it hard! Here is a picture of the item you had to work with: We came up with some ideas- and a lot of frustration with this perplexing problem!!! The class then watched the attached video on Archimedes Principle, and learned about his discovery. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ijj58xD5fDI We have spent a lot of time in our Geometry unit, and will be getting ready for a test that will be scheduled for the end of next week (Date TBA). Here are the following criteria we will be responsible for knowing on this test: 1. Calculating Area, Volume, and Perimeter (Perimeter of irregularly shaped items included, Area of rectangular shapes, or irregular shapes that are two or more rectangles combined, and Volume of a cube or rectangular prism). 2. Identifying shapes (including squares, triangles, parallelograms, trapezoids,  pentagon...

Introduction to Wetlands/and Chem test Thursday

Hi everyone! Today we began our studies in the Wetlands Unit for Science! We learned about the importance of adaptations for each living being's survival in their own environment, and how different environments might call for a different set of adaptations. We even did a fun experiment in class where we were tasked with filling out a questionnaire WITHOUT the use of some of our very important human adaptations. Some of us could not use our eyes, or our thumbs, or our arms, or even out mouths! We quickly discovered how important adaptations can be for us to live happily and successfully. Here are some videos about the adaptations of a Peppered Moth, as well as how some creatures change over time to meet the needs of their evolving environment. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xDSFlRunlrU Types of Wetlands: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1WlmGyN9VXs We'll keep learning about wetlands as the year comes to a close, and will have a field trip to Weaselhead Park on May 7...
