Week of Nov 5th-9th

Hi everyone!

We have an exciting week ahead! This Wednesday we will be having our Atlantic Region Chowder party, and will get busy in the kitchen starting at 9am. Students will be rotating through three stations; 1. Kitchen food prep, 2. Acadian dancing/culture (classroom) and 3. Newfoundland expression trivia/karaoke (classroom). Each class will rotate through each activity for a duration of roughly 40 minutes, and finishing off the morning's adventures with a nice bowl of seafood chowder.

Once again if there are any dietary restrictions, please contact Ms. Walker asap so she can make alternative arrangements/options. The ingredients contain lobster, scallops, haddock, onion, potatoes, and dairy. **Gluten free** Students are welcome to contribute a donation of $4 toward ingredients, though this is not required if families prefer not to at this time.

Students are asked to wear short sleeved shirts, closed toe shoes, and have long hair pulled back when cooking. Everyone is welcome to bring an apron from home if they like as well!

Friday morning the Grade Fives will be facilitating a Remembrance Day assembly which will begin at 10:30am. Families are welcome to attend, and it is recommended arriving 15 minutes prior to the assembly's scheduled start time in order to find seating.

Students have been working so hard to create artwork to display for the assembly, and have chosen to create paper cranes as a symbol of peace. This was inspired by the story of Sadako, a young girl who battled leukemia as the result of the events that transpired in Hiroshima. While hospitalized, Sadako was determined to fold 1000 paper cranes as symbolic messengers of hope. Sadly, she passed before reaching her goal, and now children everywhere are carrying on her legacy by folding origami cranes as a visual reminder to strive for peace on earth.

On a final note, before we head into the long weekend upon us, students are reminded that there will be a unit test in Science for our Weather unit this coming Tuesday. Students will be reviewing the concepts this week in class, and are encouraged to use the links and resources provided in previous blog posts to help them study over the weekend.

Wishing all a wonderful week ahead!

What's new in Room 2

Hi everyone, Today we had a challenge in class to try and come up with strategies to measure the volume of a very irregularly shaped item- and boy was it hard! Here is a picture of the item you had to work with: We came up with some ideas- and a lot of frustration with this perplexing problem!!! The class then watched the attached video on Archimedes Principle, and learned about his discovery. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ijj58xD5fDI We have spent a lot of time in our Geometry unit, and will be getting ready for a test that will be scheduled for the end of next week (Date TBA). Here are the following criteria we will be responsible for knowing on this test: 1. Calculating Area, Volume, and Perimeter (Perimeter of irregularly shaped items included, Area of rectangular shapes, or irregular shapes that are two or more rectangles combined, and Volume of a cube or rectangular prism). 2. Identifying shapes (including squares, triangles, parallelograms, trapezoids,  pentagon up
