What's happening in Room 2?

HI Everyone!

Lots of updates coming up!

1. Historical Figure Day is February 12th! Students have each been assigned a historical figure, and will come in character and provide a speech about their contributions to Canadian history. Attached are the guidelines for this project. We will spend the day doing activities commonly experienced in The Great Lakes Saint Lawrence Lowlands region.... but I won't ruin the surprise and tell you about ALL our fun plans just yet. If you'd like a hint, try researching a certain famous winter festival that takes place every year in Quebec. Perhaps your taste buds might find themselves in sticky situation....

2. Fraction Cakes are well on their way! Most students have already handed in their multiplied recipes with signatures, but if these have not all come back to Ms. Walker, please finish them soon.... unless you don't like chocolate, icing, or fun times :) Cake day will be February 21st. The class will bake in the staffroom at 9:15, and will ice and eat our scrumptious creations in the afternoon once they have cooled.

3. Ask your kiddos about our most recent novel, "The Wishtree" by Katherine Applegate. Katherine Applegate won the Newbery Medal for her book, "The One and Only Ivan."  Both of these fabulous books have successfully made Ms. Walker sob like a baby haha. They are fabulous!

4. We will be having our end of unit test on Electricity and Magnetism in the very near future. Stay tuned for a study sheet to help prepare, as well as the announced date. Congratulations to all students on their wonderful work on Fancy Frank's Hamster Elevator- what a hoot!

What's new in Room 2

Hi everyone, Today we had a challenge in class to try and come up with strategies to measure the volume of a very irregularly shaped item- and boy was it hard! Here is a picture of the item you had to work with: We came up with some ideas- and a lot of frustration with this perplexing problem!!! The class then watched the attached video on Archimedes Principle, and learned about his discovery. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ijj58xD5fDI We have spent a lot of time in our Geometry unit, and will be getting ready for a test that will be scheduled for the end of next week (Date TBA). Here are the following criteria we will be responsible for knowing on this test: 1. Calculating Area, Volume, and Perimeter (Perimeter of irregularly shaped items included, Area of rectangular shapes, or irregular shapes that are two or more rectangles combined, and Volume of a cube or rectangular prism). 2. Identifying shapes (including squares, triangles, parallelograms, trapezoids,  pentagon...

Introduction to Wetlands/and Chem test Thursday

Hi everyone! Today we began our studies in the Wetlands Unit for Science! We learned about the importance of adaptations for each living being's survival in their own environment, and how different environments might call for a different set of adaptations. We even did a fun experiment in class where we were tasked with filling out a questionnaire WITHOUT the use of some of our very important human adaptations. Some of us could not use our eyes, or our thumbs, or our arms, or even out mouths! We quickly discovered how important adaptations can be for us to live happily and successfully. Here are some videos about the adaptations of a Peppered Moth, as well as how some creatures change over time to meet the needs of their evolving environment. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xDSFlRunlrU Types of Wetlands: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1WlmGyN9VXs We'll keep learning about wetlands as the year comes to a close, and will have a field trip to Weaselhead Park on May 7...
